See Eric Church, Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes Cover ‘American Woman’
Eric Church might make country music, but he’s forthright about his love for the legends of that damn rock & roll: Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and, on April 5th, in Denver, former Deep Purple and Black Sabbath vocalist Glenn Hughes. Joined by keyboard maestro Chuck Leavell, famous for touring with the Rolling Stones, Church and Hughes played a version of the Guess Who’s “American Woman” Colorado stop of the Chief’s Holdin’ My Own Tour. Watch the video below, where Church snarls through the first verse, Leavell jams on the piano and Hughes takes it home in his scorching howl – still easily able to land on those high notes that earned him “Voice of Rock” moniker after all these years.
Interpreting Pearl Jam one night and Creedence Clearwater the next, Church has been drawing on some creative covers for the rare non-original song that appears in his mammoth nightly set. But alongside Hughes and Leavell, he took advantage of being flanked by rock royalty and added Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” and “The Temptation’s “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” alongside “American Woman” to his second act.
Church’s Holdin’ My Own Tour rolls into Omaha, Nebraska’s CenturyLink Center this evening.
