Director Cameron Crowe featured three Sigur Rós songs in Vanilla Sky way back in 2001, when the atmospheric band from Iceland was just beginning to make its way in America. For his new film, We Bought a Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlet Johansson, Crowe asked the band’s frontman, Jon Thor Birgisson (better known as Jónsi) to compose an entire soundtrack.
Jónsi “arrived from Iceland with a toy keyboard sampler and a headful of ideas,” says Crowe, who gave the cast and crew copies of the Sigur Rós documentary Heima. “Within a week, he had composed a series of themes that would reflect everything we’d hoped for. In his music were all the highs and lows and passionate in-betweens of the film itself.” The soundtrack comes out December 13th (and the film on December 23rd), but Rolling Stone has an exclusive stream of the full album now.
