Motley Crue to Perform 12 Las Vegas Shows In February
Mötley Crüe will become the first hard rock band to do a Las Vegas residency when they take over the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in February. Dubbed “Mötley Crüe in Sin City,” the residency will include 12 shows between February 3rd and February 19th.
In a conference call to announce the shows, frontman Vince Neil promised “over-the-top craziness. This is Las Vegas. Vegas is based on big, big shows,” Neil said. “This show we are putting together right now is something that we have never done in our lives. This is an interactive show we’re putting on – it’s going to encompass the whole venue, not just the stage that we’re standing on – a 40- by 60-foot stage. This is going to take over the whole place.”
Drummer Tommy Lee said on the call that they’ve imagined doing a show like this for years. “We’ve gone through a lot of the big Vegas production shows and we all have talked about it many times going, ‘God, could you imagine if we could only get our hands on this kind of an opportunity what we could do with it.'”
Random Notes: Rock’s Hottest Pictures
In recent years, acts like Elton John, Rod Stewart and Santana have done lung-running stands at various venues in the the city. But Crüe is the first real hard-rock band to take this route. If it goes well, could they see others following suit?
“I think it really opens the doors for the casino owners and managers to say, ‘Wow, this really works and this could be something,'” Neil said. “And they can get in some other way cool bands and start doing the residencies also. So it’s going to open a lot of doors for bands in this city.”
But who could follow in Crüe’s footsteps and deliver the same kind of spectacle fans would expect in Vegas? KISS, said Neil. “They have to have something to offer that when they come on stage they have to be visual,” Neil said. “Ninety-nine-point-nine percent of the bands that are out there today put on their jeans and sneakers and just go out there and play. That’s not very visual or interesting. So, there’s not a whole lot of bands that could pull it off.”
At this point the visuals are still being worked out, but past shows offer some clues – like the 360-degree drum kit roller coaster Lee had on the band’s last tour, which he said will be in Vegas in a modified form. And, this being “Mötley Crüe in Sin City,” the band will of course perform their classic song “Girls, Girls, Girls.”
“This is Vegas and it sure would be fun to really do it full Vegas style and have there be some nudity or almost nude,” said Lee. “It would be great to do things Vegas style where you couldn’t do some of those things in a normal arena in Ohio.”
“Yes, so basically Tommy is saying lots of naked girls on stage,” Neil added.
“That’s why we signed up for this shit,” Lee said.
Tickets for the run go on sale this Saturday, December 3rd, at 10 a.m. PST at motley.com.
