Beyoncé’s Pregnancy Boosts Her Record Sales
Beyoncé‘s revelation that she is pregnant with Jay-Z‘s child at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night has resulted in a big boost to sales for her latest album 4, which had been underperforming commercially relative to her previous blockbuster releases. “Love on Top,” the album track that she performed on the show, has launched into the Top 10 on the iTunes songs chart – it’s currently sitting at Number Six but has so far peaked at Number Five. 4, which has peaked at Number Four, is currently at Number 10.

According to Nielsen Soundscan, 4 has sold fewer than 700,000 copies since it was released on June 24th. The record’s first two singles, “Run the World (Girls)” and “The Best Thing I Never Had,” have performed modestly on the charts, failing to catch on like previous smashes “Crazy in Love,” “Irreplaceable” and “Single Ladies.” The success of “Love on Top,” a perky old-school R&B tune that recalls classic hits by Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston, may change the direction of how the album is promoted in the near future. The singer has been at work on videos for “Party” and “Countdown,” which also emphasize an overwhelmingly joyful sound with uptempo beats.
