Video: Bruce Springsteen’s Surprise Tribute to Clarence Clemons
A crowd of about 400 people at Asbury Park’s Wonder Bar got an incredible surprise last night when Bruce Springsteen came onstage and played a 45-minute tribute to Clarence Clemons. Springsteen was in the audience for the opening set by Clarence’s son Nick Clemons, and around 9:00 p.m. came onstage with the headlining act the Soul Cruisers. With the exception of his 1970s obscurity “Action In The Streets” and “Savin’ Up” (which Bruce wrote for Clemons), Springsteen and the band stuck to covers like “Ain’t Too Proud Too Beg,” “Sweet Soul Music,” “Shake,” “Raise Your Hand” and “Knock On Wood.” (Above, watch “Ain’t Too Proud Too Beg” and “Sweet Soul Music”; below is a clip of Springsteen performing “Raise Your Hand” and “Knock on Wood.”)

It was Springsteen’s first performance since Clarence’s funeral on June 21st, where he played “10th Avenue Freeze-Out” and “You’re A Friend Of Mine.”
