Listen to Death Cab for Cutie’s Catchy, Romantic New Album

When Rolling Stone talked to Death Cab for Cutie about their new album Codes and Keys earlier this year, guitarist and producer Chris Walla said the group were aiming for a “Seventies electronic” sound reminiscent of his hero Brian Eno. Though there are definitely traces of that style on Codes and Keys, it is unmistakably a Death Cab album, with frontman Ben Gibbard delivering straightforward melodies over strong guitar and keyboard hooks. The album isn’t nearly as bleak as their 2008 record Narrow Stairs – lead single “You Are a Tourist” and the title track display an uncharacteristic optimism – but the band have definitely not abandoned the wistful romanticism that has endeared them to a generation of indie rock fans. Codes and Keys will be in stores on May 31st, but you can stream it in full now.
