Butch Walker’s New LP ‘Afraid of Ghosts’ Features Johnny Depp, Ryan Adams
Butch Walker‘s new album Afraid of Ghosts will arrive on February 3rd, and in addition to recruiting Ryan Adams to serve as producer, the LP will feature guest appearances by Hüsker Dü great Bob Mould and actor/part-time rocker Johnny Depp. Walker’s seventh studio album will features 10 tracks, and the singer-songwriter has made the first single “Chrissie Hynde,” an ostensible tribute to the Pretenders frontwoman that doubles as a screw-the-world ballad, available now.
“I was very excited to NOT produce myself for once. It’s hard to fight with yourself, and sometimes a fight is what you need,” Walker tells Rolling Stone of working with Adams after self-producing his first six LPs. “Obviously when you’re a guy who can make his own records, there’s not many people that want to ‘Produce a producer.’ It’s like a magician showing a magic trick to another magician. Ryan was just ballsy and crazy enough to be like, ‘I’m gonna whip your ass in the studio.’ That alone made me want to make it happen. So… four days later, we had a record. It rules.”
Afraid of Ghosts was recorded at Adams’ PAX AM Studios in Los Angeles. Adams and Walker are also in the midst of a tour together that will run until a pair of gigs at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on November 22nd and 23rd. Meanwhile, Walker is the latest performer to rock out with Depp in 2014: So far, the actor has hit the stage with Willie Nelson in Boston, jammed with Paul McCartney and joined Adams for a cover of Danzig’s “Mother.”
