Tarantino, Spielberg, Del Toro Deflect ‘Star Wars’ Director Rumors
Guillermo del Toro is the latest director to deflect rumors that he was in line to direct the upcoming Star Wars sequels, joining Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino and others who say they’re not involved.
“You know, I saw it on the Internet, but I haven’t approached them, they haven’t formally approached me,” del Toro told Fanhattan (he reportedly emphasized the “formally”). “I mean, I heard some rumblings, but to me it’s really – I have so many projects to discuss or think about. [For] something that is not a possibility yet, I don’t do that. You know, because I have so many things that I need to catch up with. If this becomes ever a reality, and there’s an approach to do it, I would then think about it, but – it’s like thinking if I want to date a supermodel. I don’t think about these things.”
Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm a few weeks ago from Star Wars creator George Lucas and announced a new trilogy, there’s been a whirlwind of rumors regarding who might helm the new project.
When Entertainment Weekly asked Quentin Tarantino recently if he’d be interested in the job, the sharp-tongued director responded, “I could so care less.” He went on to add: “Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.”
Steven Spielberg also speculation that he was involved, telling Access Hollywood, “No! No! It’s not my genre. It’s my best friend George’s genre.”
While the hunt for a director continues, yesterday, it was announced that Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) would pen the next chapter in the Star Wars saga.
