Watch Flaming Lips Dissect the Making of Beatles Covers LP ‘Fwends’
On the brand-new With a Little Help From My Fwends, the Flaming Lips take a crack at one of the greatest albums of all time, covering the Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band track by track. As the title suggests, artists including Miley Cyrus, Moby, Chuck Inglish and Tegan and Sara all join in on the action. Here, in a new clip about the LP, Lips members Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd discuss how it all came together, focusing in particular on “Fixing a Hole.”
“Sometimes we believe the recording is gonna start at Steven’s house,” says Coyne. “And if we don’t get to it quick enough, it just evolves and evolves and evolves. I think this was one of those that by the time I heard it he felt like it was like, ‘Hey I’ve got something here.'”
Drozd, for his part, speaks on what it’s like to cover the British band’s tunes. “If you’re a musician or whatever,” he says, “playing Beatles stuff is great because some of it is really simple and it is rewarding quickly because its so easy to play. But some of its really complicated and it surprises you.”
