Surkin and Todd Edwards Rock Synths on ‘I Want You Back’ Remix – Song Premiere
When French house producer Surkin and New Jersey garage pioneer Todd “The God” Edwards teamed up for a collaborative EP last year, it was expected to be a primarily modern garage affair. However, the two ended up coming away with “I Want You Back,” a proper pop track that marked Edwards’ first since co-producing and singing on Daft Punk‘s “Face to Face.” (He more recently loaned his talents to the robotic pair’s “Fragments of Time” off Random Access Memories).
“The idea was to do something experimental because we already had two ‘main’ tracks,” Edwards tells Rolling Stone. “Crazy that this enjoyable, creative experiment became the lead track.”

“I Want You Back” recently got the remix treatment from Canblaster, whose beefed it up into the synth-and-bass-stuttering version you can hear now. It will appear on label Sound Pellegrino’s new compilation SND.PE Vol. 01, out June 17th (you can pre-order now).
“The global mood of the original track was nostalgic and desperate; for this remix, I wanted to push each part of the instrumental to support Todd’s vocals in the most extreme way,” says Canblaster of his remix. “A first part where the protagonist remembers the exact moment where the girl told him that she was leaving, driving him insane, with a more paranoid version of Surkin’s synth chops. Then the instrumental starts building up in a very disturbing way. A short moment of clarity in the form of a little piano break: he made up his mind, he wants her back, and he’s gonna get her back. The second verse reveals all that he could never tell to his love over a nostalgic and hopeful chord build-up, to finally get back to the part where he tells her that he wants her back and a little synth solo responds to him because she already knows the other half of the words.”
