Rising Artist Margo Price Recalls Classic Country in New Video
Margo Price knows from heartbreak. Although many joke about their lives being a country song, the rising star of Nashville’s burgeoning twang-country scene — along with Kelsey Waldon, Cale Tyson and the seemingly always onstage band Johnny Appleseed — Price has truly been through the wringer. Most tragically, the singer and her husband lost one of her twin boys to a rare heart ailment a week after their birth.
It’s no wonder then that her voice aches with the same world-weariness that permeated Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette‘s songs. In her new release “Since You Put Me Down,” Price — who also performed with the roots-rock band Buffalo Clover — and her group the Price Tags address some of those woes.
“I wrote this song in a very self-medicated time of life, both personally and professionally. After losing one of my twin sons, my manager at the time left me high and dry after promising more than he could deliver,” Price tells Rolling Stone Country. “I gave him my money and a year of my life that I could never get back. It was similar to a bad breakup so I wrote about it that way.”
The Illinois-born Price describes her music as “honest, no frills classic country.” While she’s happy to sing and entertain — and in concert, she’s as charismatic as they come — she has a clear vision for her music.
“I’m not writing to please anybody but myself these days. Too many folks try to do that and it shows,” Price says. “I’m writing from my heart and my experiences over the last 10 years, both personally and in the music business.”
Price recently filmed a music video for “Since You Put Me Down” at the Inglewood Motel in East Nashville. Directed by Joshua Shoemaker, the video was shot live and in one take. Check it out above, in Rolling Stone Country‘s exclusive premiere.
