Mog Delivers Streaming Music to Cars, TVs
The next frontier for streaming online music may just be cars and TV sets, as online subscription service Mog will soon arrive on Internet-ready LG, Samsung and Vizio televisions and connected devices, as well as in BMW’s Mini vehicles. Support for Sonos wireless home music accessories is also planned.
Mog will come preinstalled on TVs and home theater systems, offering drivers, living room viewers and owners of Blu-ray players on-demand access to tunes via a cloud-based solution. Mini owners can access it by plugging a smartphone into the dashboard. Mog plans to charge TV owners $5 and Mini and Sonos owners $10 for access to its library of more than 10 million songs.
Clearly hoping to outmaneuver rivals Napster, Rhapsody and Rdio, Mog’s strategy looks to piggyback on the growing deployment and availability of streaming services like Pandora and Qriocity on a widening range of consumer electronics. Sony has publicly espoused the value of bringing music into the living room, while Mog tells The New York Times it sees cars as “the holy grail” for streaming services.
Putting it in direct contention with both online rivals and the satellite radio industry, Mog further plans to offer easy search and discovery features, along with custom radio feeds tailored by artist or personal preference.
