Charli XCX Parties Hard on Bass-Heavy New Single ‘Break the Rules’
Charli XCX fearlessly flies the #YOLO flag on her propulsive new single, “Break the Rules.” The synth-fueled cut, which premiered on Monday at Buzzfeed, is the latest taste of the singer’s upcoming second LP, Sucker, which will be released on October 21st via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records.
“Break the Rules” finds the 22-year-old electro-pop newcomer rebelling against The Evil Norm and plotting a decadent night on the town, as an incessant bassline and acoustic guitar strums build to a sing-along chorus. “I don’t wanna go to school,” she sings, “I just wanna break the rules / Going to the discotheque / Getting high and getting wrecked.”
Charli (real name Charlotte Aitchison) tweeted a link to the premiere early Monday morning, writing, “2nd album is SUCKER. new song is BREAK THE RULES.” She previously tweeted news that she’d completed her new LP and linked to an Instagram post, writing “ARE YOU READY ANGELS?,” along with with a picture of herself floating in a pool accompanied by a giant, heart-shaped lollipop.
Aitchison first gained national attention with her 2013 album, True Romance (her first commercially released LP). But 2014 has been her breakout year: She co-wrote (and was featured on) Iggy Azalea’s ubiquitous summer smash “Fancy,” and her recent single “Boom Clap” (from The Fault in Our Stars soundtrack) climbed to Number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August.
The singer recently announced a spree of tour dates for September and October, starting with a gig in Nuevo, Leon, Mexico on September 6th.
