Lady Gaga and Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Film Sets September Premiere Date
After hinting at a collaborative film project earlier this year, Lady Gaga and Jean Paul Gaultier have confirmed that Gaga by Gaultier, a film in which the designer interviews the singer, will air on the CW September 12 at 8pm ET – just in time for New York Fashion Week, naturally.
Compared to some of the more alarming media moves both Gaga and Gaultier have commited on their own, there’s nothing innately flinchworthy about this partnership; if anything, their combined affinity for theatricality and sartorial shock value seemed destined to dovetail. A strategic public spectacle was inevitable.
After all, they are already preternaturally bonded by the ultimate pop unifier: Madonna. Gaultier famously dressed Madge for her Blonde Ambition world tour in 1990, a game-changing costuming escapade that single-handedly reinvented stagewear in the form of the now iconic “bullet bra.” Gaga, who wore Gaultier on her recent US Weekly cover, has similarly evolved the concept of “underwear as outerwear,” often going pantless while paying homage to the Madonna/Gaultier cone-shaped paradigm in her “Born This Way” video.
Gaga by Gaultier takes place in the designer’s Paris studio, and as expected, presents a dialogue between Gaga and Gaultier on all things fashion – specifically, how it can transcend itself as mere clothing to become a powerful form of visual art and expression, and how the singer uses that power to communicate ideas to her “Little Monsters.” Incidentally, a few of her Monsters are wasting no time in painstakingly documenting the never-boring outfits their idol wears throughout the film, which has already aired in France. On a related note, Gaga will soon premiere her video for “You and I” via Twitter. The clip will reportedly cast Gaga as a heartbroken vagabond who walks on foot from Nebraska to New York City to win her lover back. “I’m walking with no luggage and no nothing,” the singer hints. “It’s just me and my ankles are bleeding a little bit and there’s grass stuck in my shoes and I’ve got this outfit on and it’s real sort of New York clothing and I’m sprinting…When you’re away from someone you love, it’s torture.”
The video will make its debut as Gaga’s 1,000th tweet. As of press time, she has 991 tweets – and 12,298,187 followers waiting on baited breath for the big reveal.
