‘American Horror Story’ Renewed for Fourth Season
American Horror Story will live to scare again: FX has ordered a fourth season of the macabre drama co-created by Brad Falchuk and Glee mastermind Ryan Murphy.
“Put simply, Ryan Murphy is a master television producer,” FX CEO John Landgraf said in a press release. “Time and time again, he reinvents the form. What he, co-creator Brad Falchuk and their producers . . . and the entire production team and cast responsible for the American Horror Story franchise have done is nothing short of extraordinary. Every year, they create a riveting and brilliant new miniseries.”

The show’s acclaimed third season, the witchcraft-centric Coven (which star Sarah Paulson recently said was “too scary” to watch at night), premiered last month and is set to wrap in January 2014. Landgraf calls it “the best (season) yet,” and fans generally seem to agree: This season’s ratings have been far superior to the show’s previous seasons, Murder House and Asylum; so far, Coven is drawing an average of 7.74 million total viewers, with marked increases across the demographic spectrum. The press release cites this season as “the highest-rated miniseries of 2013 in delivery of Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.”
Critics have also praised the series throughout its tenure – to date, American Horror Story has earned a total of 34 Emmy nominations. Nonetheless, Landgraf has high hopes for the upcoming fourth season: “I have no doubt that the next installment will be even better.”
At this point, It’s unclear what the fourth season cast will look like: Jessica Lange is planning to leave the show after one more year; meanwhile, a representative for Paulson told Rolling Stone that the Coven star has not signed on for the next season.
A new Coven episode, “Burn, Witch. Burn!,” airs tonight at 10 p.m. EST.
