Jake Bugg Slays ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’ on ‘Tonight Show’
British rock wunderkind Jake Bugg took the Tonight Show stage last night for a riveting, raucous performance of “What Doesn’t Kill You,” the latest single off his superb 2013 effort Shangri La. Clad in all black and looking unassuming as ever, Bugg performed the song with a ferocity that betrayed his otherwise staid stage presence.

Shangri La is the follow up to Bugg’s self-titled debut, which was released in the UK last year and arrived in the States back in April. With a style that recalls early Bob Dylan as much as it does Oasis, the 19-year-old Bugg got the chance to record Shangri La with Rick Rubin at the super-producer’s Malibu studio, which bares the same name as his record.
During an interview with Rolling Stone before the release of Shangri La, Bugg spoke about what made working with Rubin so special: “I’ll take some ideas to him and he’ll be like, ‘Why don’t you repeat that line?’ As an artist you can get quite defensive about your work. But it never feels like Rick’s imposing on that. He likes to try and get the best out of an artist.”
With his breakout 2013 wrapping up, Bugg will return to the road at the beginning of next year for a tour alongside the Strokes‘ Albert Hammond Jr. The trek kicks off January 9th at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Maryland and wraps up at the House of Blues in Houston, Texas on January 29th.
