‘The Newsroom’ Renewed for Third and Final Season
Aaron Sorkin‘s cable-news dramedy The Newsroom will return for its third season this fall. Like two other HBO shows nearing their sunsets – True Blood and Boardwalk Empire – it will be the series’ final run. Contrary to Jeff Daniels‘s “It’s official” tweet in September, Sorkin has reportedly been stalling on committing to a new season for months. The Hollywood Reporter clarified today that Daniels had posted the tweet because the staff had been locked in to return since September.
Relive the Best Moments From The Newsroom‘s First Season
Variety adds that the showrunner was using that time to explore avenues beyond the exploits of The Newsroom’s self-righteous Will McAvoy character. Specifically, Sorkin has been writing the script for a Steve Jobs biopic, which he has since turned in to Sony.
Is The Newsroom the Best Bad Show Ever?
Now that the Jobs script is out of the way, Sorkin has turned his attention back to The Newsroom, and production on the new season will commence in the spring. But while the cast will be the same, Sorkin and the other executive producers have welcomed a new face behind the scenes. Joining their team is actor Paul Lieberstein, best known for his portrayal as the beleaguered HR manager Toby Flenderson on The Office – a show on which he was also an executive producer.
Watch Jeff Daniels Discuss His Role on The Newsroom
Like Sorkin, Daniels has been busy during his time away from The Newsroom. Last July, the actor confirmed that he would be making a sequel to Dumb and Dumber, titled Dumb and Dumber To. A couple of months later, Daniels said that the movie would contain scenes that make the original’s toilet scene look “lame.” “I can’t divulge what [the new scenes are],” he told Rolling Stone, “just that they’ve topped it.” The movie is set to come out on November 14th.
