‘Silver Linings Playbook’ Wins Big at Independent Spirit Awards
Silver Linings Playbook took home the top prize and a few more at the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, making a splash at the last awards season to-do before the Oscars. The film (which is in the running for eight Academy Awards tonight) won best feature, along with best director and best screenplay awards for David O. Russell and best female lead for Jennifer Lawrence.
Beasts of the Southern Wild, which had been a favorite for the major categories, took the award for best cinematography. Michael Haneke’s Amour, which earned five Oscar nominations, won the award for best international film. The Invisible War, which addresses sexual assault in the military, was awarded best documentary.

The Sessions won prizes for John Hawkes as male lead, in his role as a man who hires a sex surrogate, and Helen Hunt, who played the surrogate, for best supporting female. Best supporting male went to Matthew McConaughey for his role as a strip-club owner in Magic Mike. McConaughey, who was also nominated as best male lead for Killer Joe, accepted his award with a little musical number, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“I had to take my pants off to win a trophy,” he sang from the stage. “I had to drop my drawers to win an award.”
