Wild Flag On how Rihanna influenced their punk
Indie-rock supergroup Wild Flag, made up of Helium's Mary Timony, the Minders' Rebecca Cole, and Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss, released their debut album in September to ecstatic critical acclaim (including a four-star review from Rolling Stone). The band, currently on tour, recently stopped by Rolling Stone's studio to talk about their whirlwind first year together, how they captured their live energy on the album and why they almost joined a furry convention on tour. They also talk about unexpected influences on the album: "I listened to a lot of top-40 music for help with melodies," says Brownstein. "I came up with the melody for 'Romance' after a day of listening to Rihanna and Beyoncé, and then filtering it through my messed up post-punk filter."
