Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart Breakdance for Jenny Lewis Video
Jenny Lewis has tapped Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Brie Larson to help her with a big task: bringing back track suits and stomping all over gender norms. The four women star in the wonderful new video for Lewis’ Beck-produced single “Just One of the Guys,” set to appear on her upcoming solo album, The Voyager.
Jenny Lewis’ Voyage to a Restless New LP (And a Colorful Pantsuit)
Directed by Lewis, the musician first strums out the tune while donning another brilliant rainbow pantsuit while Stewart, Larson and Hathaway — who was lucky enough to score keytar duties — back her up with more detached apathy than any of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” ladies. But when the track suits, wigs and faux mustaches come out, all bets are off, with the crew flaunting their overwrought machismo and flying karate kicks. It’s a fitting visual — one that even includes Hathaway sporting a rat tail — that brings just the right amount of levity to Lewis’ poignant, shimmering number about becoming comfortable with yourself and your womanhood with age.
The Voyager marks Lewis’ first solo album in six years and will see release on July 29th via Warner Bros. The record was made during a particular difficult point in Lewis’ life, coming in the wake of Rilo Kiley‘s split and the death of her estranged father. Struck by bouts of intense insomnia, Lewis would write songs to keep herself busy; and last year, following an extensive tour with the Postal Service, she entered the studio with Ryan Adams and his partner Mike Viola.
“Throughout that process, I started songs, I threw them away, I basically occupied my mind with the lyrics. While I was lying down trying to get back to sleep, the words kept flashing before my eyes like a news ticker or something,” Lewis told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. “Every little syllable was ironed out because I had enough time to really think about it. I’d truly be up for hours every night, and I would watch the Gatti-Ward boxing trilogy on repeat over and over and over again, that and the Carl Sagan Cosmos series. It got pretty psychedelic.”
Lewis’ current tour runs through the beginning of August and includes stops at the Newport Folk Festival, Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and the Austin City Limits fests.
