Exclusive! Legendary Grammy Winner Aaron Neville Performs For Yahoo! Music
The 55th annual Grammy Awards are nearly upon us, and what could be a better way to celebrate Grammy season than an exclusive performance from one of the music world’s most versatile Grammy winners?
Aaron Neville, who’s won scores of awards over his remarkable, multigenre, five-decade career–both as a solo artist and as part of family group the Neville brothers–visited Yahoo! Music to give us a taste of some of his favorite classic tunes. Some of these songs appear on his new collection, My True Story, a project he engineered to showcase the music he grew up loving by covering some of the doo-wop era’s best numbers.
The new set not only features Neville’s rich interpretations of these songs, it also boasts guitar playing from yet another musical legend, the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, as well as production from Richards and Blue Note Records president Don Was.
It’s always a fascinating experience to listen to a seasoned artist work with the songs that personally moved or influenced him, and it’s of course no different in this case. Neville himself has an arsenal of hits spanning R&B to country to gospel, so it is especially moving to hear his well-loved tenor handle songs from which he learned his craft.
Neville also sat down with us for an exclusive interview discussing his latest work and how doo-wop has influenced his career over the years (he calls the genre “medicine” to him). He also talks about his desire to continue to branch out musically–perhaps record a full blues set, do more country music, and maybe even put out a children’s album. Enjoy!
