Adam Lambert: I ‘Couldn’t Help’ Voicing Opinion on ‘Les Miz’
Adam Lambert caused a bit of stir when he tweeted his reactions to Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables last week, opining that the musical numbers should have been recorded and polished in a studio rather than sung raw. “I should prob stop fanning the flames on this one,” the pop singer tweeted a few days later, “but i love a good debate – couldn’t help myself.”
In his initial critique, Lambert called the film “visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers.” Though Lambert praised the performances from Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen, and noted it was “cool” the vocals were recorded live, he added “with that cast, they should have studio recorded and sweetened the vocals.”

A few days later another member of the cast, Russell Crowe, responded on Twitter: “I don’t disagree with Adam, sure it could have been sweetened, Hooper wanted wanted it raw and real, that’s how it is.”
After Lambert’s review went viral, the singer clarified his comments over a string of tweets, revealing his particular love of the original Broadway cast recording: “Those raw and real moments when characters broke down or were expressing the ugliness of the human condition were superb. However… there were times when the vocals weren’t able to convey the power, beauty and grace that the score ALSO calls for.”
