After skipping several key gigs — including a date opening for the Rolling Stones — and acting erratically onstage, Winehouse's rep announced she was "putting all her touring commitments on hold … to address her health issues." She made it to the States for August 5, 2007's Lollapalooza in Chicago (see above), but nixed her subsequent U.S. and Canadian tour in late August.

Winehouse shocked the world again on August 24, 2007, when photos of her and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil emerged showing the couple bruised and bloodied after a purported fight at a hotel. Winehouse texted Perez Hilton to set the record straight: "I was cutting myself after he (BLAKE) found me in our room about to do drugs with a call girl and rightly said I wasn't good enough for him. I lost it and he saved my life."

Because she couldn't secure a visa to come to the U.S. for MTV's Woodies, Winehouse pulled out of the awards show in late October. On November 14, 2007, the singer made her return to the stage in Birmingham, England, where she spat, slurred and stammered through her performance. Winehouse also dedicated many songs to Fielder-Civil, who was arrested on November 9th and charged with obstruction of justice.

As Winehouse's behavior became increasingly erratic — she's pictured here wandering the streets at 4 a.m. on December 4, 2007 — the accolades for her album Back to Black kept piling up. Two days later, she received six Grammy nominations, second only to Kanye West's eight.

Winehouse continued to visit her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, who remains in jail on charges that he attempted to bribe a bartender, James King, with $400,000 to withdraw a statement he made to police after Fielder-Civil and another friend allegedly assaulted King.

January 2008 proved to be an especially rough month for Winehouse: On January 23rd, English police said they'd examine footage of the singer allegedly smoking crack to determine whether or not to charge her with a crime. The next day Winehouse did something she swore she'd never do in song: go to rehab.

Because she still couldn't secure a visa to travel to the States, Winehouse performed at the Grammys on February 10, 2008 via satellite. Her performance was hailed as a success and she picked up five awards, including trophies for Best New Artist and Record of the Year (during her acceptance speech she shouted out "my Blake incarcerated!").

On May 6, 2008, Winehouse (seen here at Rock in Rio) received some good news: her Back to Black replaced Coldplay's X&Y as the all-time top-selling album on Amazon.com, a move the retailer says was helped by Winehouse's constant news coverage.

In May, Winehouse began spending more time with the equally troubled Pete Doherty, who told the press he was collaborating with the singer on new songs. The pair hit the town right after Winehouse was released on bail (she was arrested for suspicion of drug possession related to the video of her allegedly smoking crack).

On June 23, 2008, Winehouse oft-quoted father Mitch confirmed that doctors say the singer shows signs of emphysema. Doctors have warned Winehouse that if she continues to smoke drugs, she'd not only lose her voice, but "it will kill her," as only 70 percent of her lung capacity remains.
