At the Movies With Peter Travers: “Valentine’s Day” and “The Wolfman”
It’s Valentine’s Day this weekend *At the Movies*, and with this heartwarming holiday comes a namesake film that Rolling Stone‘s Peter Travers predicts will be the Worst Movie of 2010, Valentine’s Day. Travers can’t help but hate this movie about love, and there’s not much to love about this “all-star fiasco” starring Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner and dozens more stars who should have known better than appear in this film.
“Everybody in this movie sucks,” Travers says, adding that Valentine’s Day is the most inane, horrible and stupid romantic comedy he’s seen in a long time, and that’s saying a lot considering When In Rome and Leap Year are both in theaters now. So while you and your significant other are out seeing VD this weekend — the movie is guaranteed to rake it in at the box office — Travers will be working on enlarging his Scum Bucket to ensure it’s big enough to hold Valentine’s Day.
One more major motion picture is hitting multiplexes this weekend, and even though The Wolfman is severely flawed, compared to Valentine’s Day, this horror remake is Citizen Kane, says Travers. Still, this reboot of the classic Lon Chaney Jr. film is not good, as it’s devoid of humor or scares. Instead, it spends much of its screen time showing off the special effects of Benicio Del Toro transforming into the Wolf Man, and in the post-Avatar world the effects aren’t all that special. The usually great Anthony Hopkins plays Del Toro’s father in the film, and his performance is so hammy it should come with pineapples and cloves, Travers says. Overall, it’s a typical February studio dumping ground movie, but it sure beats seeing Julia Roberts and friends.
