Travers: Stars of ‘Gangster Squad’ Owe Us an Apology
January is underway, and you know what that means – it's cold outside, and you're better off staying in and watching Netflix than seeking refuge at your local movie theater, where the pickings are slim. This week, Peter Travers slams Gangster Squad, a film about a crew of Los Angeles police officers who must go undercover to stop the notorious mob honcho Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn. Along with Penn, the star-studded cast features Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, yet as Travers notes, it poorly rips off every good gangster film, from The Untouchables to L.A. Confidential. It's like a greatest hits collection of gangster movies, says Travers, "but done by the lousiest cover band you have ever seen. All you good people that made this movie, you owe everybody out there an apology."
