Earlier in the year, Cake released Showroom of Compassion, their first album of original material in seven years. Now, the band is releasing the album as a 7-inch box set with two bonus tracks, available for stream here. While both bonus tracks “Huge Misunderstanding” and “The Federal Funding March,” are marked by Cake’s trademark twinkling mariachi horns and upbeat tempos, “The Federal Funding March” is a marching band-inspired take on the band’s earlier track “Federal Funding.”
The song is the namesake of Cake’s Federal Funding March initiative, which is a nationwide contest among high school and college marching bands. The entries require a video submission of the marching band performing Cake’s “Federal Funding March,” and the winner will perform the track with Cake in an upcoming music video. Cake singer John McCrea explains to Rolling Stone his inspiration in writing the song. “Lately there’s been a lot of debate about what government should and shouldn’t do. I wrote ‘Federal Funding’ with both positive and negative aspects of government in mind. There are certain things only government can do, and I think it would be selfish and shortsighted to indiscriminately shut everything down, privatize it all, etc,” he says. “Although it might be emotionally satisfying for many people, it is probably not the adult thing to do.”
The Showroom of Compassion box set is available now, but you can stream “Huge Misunderstanding” and “The Federal Funding March” for free here now.
