Woodstock Organizers Team With Sony Music for “Social Network” Website
While organizers continue to plot out a 40th anniversary celebration to honor the original Woodstock, the 1969 festival will enter the 21st century with a new and refurbished Woodstock.com that will act as a “cutting edge live music social network for all concerts,” per an official press release. Woodstock Ventures will collaborate with Sony Music entertainment for the Website’s launch, which will take place in early June, according to a Sony spokesperson.
Woodstock.com will also be the major destination for all things Woodstock, collecting exclusive interviews, guest editors, audio-visual content, rare photographs, encyclopedia, Wiki and an online store dedicated to Woodstock ’69, ’94 and ’99. The site will also house concert information, access to ticketing, show reviews, blogs and a forum. The press release was vague regarding whether the site would encompass concerts nationwide or just those pertaining to the area.
“Woodstock began as a dream and became a reality that exceeded our wildest expectations,” said organizer Michael Lang in the release. “That dream lives on and our hope is that Woodstock.com will harness the power of 21st century technology to the communal idealism and values that continue to grow out of Woodstock.” News of the Website comes just weeks after Lang’s producing partner Joel Rosenman told Rock Daily that the festival’s 40th anniversary celebration might not even take place in 2009. “It may not be the year for Woodstock,” he told RS. “We’ve had some very encouraging news about this year in the past few weeks, but we don’t know for sure. We’re not going to let some technical number, some digit, determine when the next Woodstock is.”?
The Website is just one of many ways the original Woodstock will be celebrated this summer. As Rock Daily previously reported, the Ang Lee film Taking Woodstock will hit theaters August 14th, one day before Woodstock’s actual 40th birthday. Rolling Stone will have much more on upcoming Woodstock events in our next issue.
