Ruben Ready to Roll
American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is working on his
debut album under the direction of music mogul Clive Davis and
producer-songwriter Harold Lilly (Angie Stone, Craig David).
Studdard promises that his CD will have a little of everything.
“My fan base was so broad that I can’t leave people out,” he says.
“I’ll do a gospel song, a few pop songs, some club tunes. . . .”
Naturally, the album will also include a couple of covers (of the
Bee Gees and Donny Hathaway).
But the soul singer is most excited about “Can I Get Your
Attention,” a new track he recorded with rapper Fat Joe. “It’s
hot,” Studdard says. “We’re both big guys — it was like
synergy.”
The debut albums of both Studdard and Idol runner-up Clay Aiken were originally slated for a face-off on August 19th, however release dates for both have been pushed back to separate September dates. Studdard, who garnered 130,000 more votes than Aiken to become the American Idol winner , was topped on the charts by his runner-up when their singles were released simultaneously in early June; during their first week in stores Aiken’s “This Is the Night/Bride Over Troubled Water” outsold Studdard’s “Flying Without Wings/Superstar” by 107,000 copies.
