St. Vincent Brings ‘SNL’ Into the Future
“I’m always trying to reach through the time-space continuum and bring something from the future to the present,” St. Vincent‘s Annie Clark recently told Rolling Stone. She was referring at the time to the playlist she compiled of songs to play at a dinner party on the moon, but the same philosophy clearly informed her season-closing performance as musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
St. Vincent’s Space Oddities Playlist
Clark opened with her tech-voyeurism anthem “Digital Witness,” on a stark and futuristic lilac-washed set. Accompanied by a live drummer and two folks on synthesizers punching in the song’s distinctive horn blasts, Clark alternated blazing guitar licks with her strangely deliberate arm dancing and carefully choreographed head snaps. The addition of a bass player on the exuberant “Birth in Reverse” brought even more oddball choreography into the mix for the second act. Both tracks come from the album St. Vincent, which Clark released in February.
St. Vincent heads to Australia on Thursday and then over to Europe for much of June, returning to the U.S. in time for the Pitchfork Festival on July 19th.
