Glee returns tonight after a three-week hiatus – with a new cast member, Glee Project winner Damian McGinty, who plays Rory Flanagan on the show. McGinty will show off his vocals on Teddy Thompson’s “Take Care Of Yourself” (stream above), which he will perform on tonight’s episode and is also featured on the album Glee: Season 3, out today.
McGinty tells Rolling Stone he wasn’t familar with the song when Glee creator Ryan Murphy first suggested it to him, but once he found the tune he knew it was a perfect vehicle for him. “On this song I’m basically showing off my entire range cause it starts off in jazz voice, but then the whole verse is in falsetto,” he says. “I like the fact I got a chance to show off my full range. I just hope people like it.”
The 19-year-old from Derry in Northern Ireland will play an Irish exchange student who is not welcomed right away into McKinley High School. But Rory does find one person willing to take him in. “Finn [Cory Monteith] really takes Rory under his wing and it’s like a big brother, little brother relationship,” says McGinty. “Finn is basically trying to help Rory to fit in, to feel wanted. Rory goes on this huge journey of getting bullied, but always smiling.”
McGinty will also sing the Muppets’ “Being Green,” a track that shows off his acceptance of his Irish heritage on the show. Could we see that translate into some Irish music on Glee? If McGinty has his way, yes. “I’m a huge fan of the Script – I’d love to do some of their stuff. But of course U2, and I’m the biggest fan of Damien Rice. I would either do ‘Cannonball’ or ‘The Blower’s Daughter,'” he says. “[We could] introduce some music that most people back home love, that we’re really familiar with.”
