Richard Griffey, the founder of Los Angeles-based R&B label Solar Records, passed away last Friday following complications from quadruple-bypass heart surgery. He was 71. Solar Records, short for “Sounds of Los Angeles Records” and dubbed “the Motown of the Eighties,” had hits like Lakeside‘s “Fantastic Voyage” and the Whispers‘ “And the Beat Goes On.” The company employed songwriters like Babyface and L.A.
