Dylan ’64 Show Due on CD
The sixth volume of Bob Dylan‘s The Bootleg Series will be
released next year. The album, the third live set in the series,
will be culled from an October 31, 1964, Dylan performance at
Philharmonic Hall in New York City, dubbed the “Halloween Concert”
among fans and collectors. The album will follow The Bootleg
Series Volume 5: Bob Dylan Live 1975 — The Rolling Thunder
Revue, which Columbia/Legacy will release later this month.
Unlike Volume 5 and its predecessor, The Bootleg
Series Volume 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966 — Royal Albert Hall
Concert, the Philharmonic show predates the release of
Bringing It All Back Home and Dylan’s subsequent, infamous
movement away from his folk beginnings (notably his 1965 Newport
Folk Festival appearance). The performance still previews several
songs from Bringing, including “Mr. Tambourine Man” and
“It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding).” Also represented are tracks
from The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (“A Hard Rain’s Gonna
Fall”), The Times They Are A-Changin’ (“The Lonesome Death
of Hattie Carroll”) and Another Side of Bob Dylan
(“Spanish Harlem Incident”). Dylan’s self-titled 1962 debut album,
which featured only a handful of original songs, was not
represented. Several songs — including “Mama You’ve Been on My
Mind,” “With God on Our Side” and “All I Really Want to Do” —
featured guest vocals by Joan Baez.
The Bootleg Series was initiated with the 1991 release
of the three-CD rarities box set, The Bootleg Series Volume
1-3: Rare and Unreleased 1961-1991. The exact release date for
Volume 6 has not yet been set.
