Peter Buck’s First Solo Track Surfaces Online
The first solo track by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck surfaced over the weekend after airing on the Thursday episode of Diane’s Kamikaze Fun Machine on WFMU in New Jersey. The episode featured guest DJ Steve Wynn, who was given permission by his Baseball Project bandmate Buck to play the song on the air, but had to play it over his phone due to technical issues. You can hear the track, titled “10 Million B.C.,” below, and hear it in the context of the original broadcast on the WFMU website.
The cut, a dark garage rock tune that recalls both the Cramps and “The Peter Gunn Theme,” is the first piece of music to come out from any member of R.E.M. since the band called it quits last year. The track marks the debut of Buck as a vocalist, but don’t get too attached to his voice – reports indicate that he has no interest in singing in concert when he hits the road. Official plans for Buck’s record have not been announced, but according to Wynn, the guitarist intends to release the album only on vinyl.
