Lady Gaga Premieres “Bad Romance,” Her Craziest Video Yet
Just one album into her career, Lady Gaga has established herself as someone impervious to predictions — especially in the music video department. And the video for her first Fame Monster single, “Bad Romance,” has Gaga providing fans with perhaps her craziest, brightest canvas yet. A collaboration between director Frances Lawrence and the Haus of Gaga — or in this case, the Bath House of Gaga — “Bad Romance” finds Gaga simultaneously paying homage visually to Kubrick and lyrically to Hitchcock (“I want your psycho / Your vertigo stick / Want you in my rear window”), all while dressed in some of the most outrageous outfits she’s ever worn (and that’s saying a lot). The video premiered today over at Gaga’s official site.
Check out Lady Gaga’s wildest wardrobe moments.
“I knew [Lawrence’s] ability as a director is so much higher than what I could [do],” Gaga told MTV News last week about working with a music video veteran who went on to direct Will Smith in I Am Legend. “There’s this one shot in the video where I get kidnapped by supermodels. I’m washing away my sins and they shove vodka down my throat to drug me up before they sell me off to the Russian mafia.” The Russian mafia storyline is just one of many seemingly interconnecting plotlines weaving in and out of “Bad Romance.” As with any good music video, “Bad Romance” also boasts pyrotechnics, fleeting NSFW moments, creepy hairless cats and near-subconscious product placement (see if you can spot her Heartbeats headphones).
As with Gaga’s other videos, the main star here is Gaga’s otherworldly fashion. She strikes a pose in her now-famed “Orbit” outfit, does a Where the Wild Things Are-inspired dance in a white latex bodysuit and traipses around in Alexander McQueen’s 12-inch tall “Armadillo” stilettos. In the video’s final act, Gaga, donning what appears to be a polar bear fur coat (head included, natch), begins to disrobe, thus causing her male companion with the gold-plated jaw to spontaneously burst into flames. Now that’s a sentence only a Lady Gaga video can produce.
As Rolling Stone previously reported, our Hot Diva will release her supped-up The Fame Monster on November 23rd. The re-release will contain all of the songs from The Fame plus eight new tracks, including Gaga’s collaboration with Beyoncé, “Telephone.” Gaga’s The Monster Ball tour kicks off November 27th in Quebec (Get Rolling Stone‘s inside scoop on the Monster Ball from Gaga here.) Before all that, however, Gaga will guest star on next Monday’s episode of Gossip Girl.
