New Elvis Cut Surfaces
A previously unreleased track by Elvis Presley will be included on
the upcoming collection Elvis 2nd to None, due October
7th. The lost cut, “I’m a Roustabout,” was recorded for Presley’s
1964 film Roustabout (which also starred Barbara
Stanwyck), but was not used.
The song was written by Winfield Scott and Otis Blackwell; the
latter also co-wrote some of the King’s classics, including “All
Shook Up” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” After being rejected by the film’s
producers, the original recording of the song sat in Scott’s
basement in New Jersey. Presley went on to record another title
cut, simply titled “Roustabout,” for inclusion on the soundtrack.
The single didn’t chart, but the Roustabout soundtrack
reached Number One on the album charts in 1964 and remained in the
Top Forty for five months.
Elvis 2nd to None is the sequel to last year’s 9
million-selling Elvis 30 #1 Hits, and also features a new
remix of the King’s “Rubberneckin'” by DJ Paul Oakenfold. The
single, which follows last year’s successful Junkie XL remix of “A
Little Less Conversation,” will be shipped to radio on August 25th
and retail two weeks later.
The new collection will arrive less than two months after Elvis
Week, which wrapped up over the weekend in Memphis, marking the
twenty-sixth anniversary of Elvis’ death (August 16th). An
estimated 30,000 fans visited the city for the event, capped by a
candle-light vigil on Saturday night.
