Prince Pens “Purple” Fight Song For Minnesota Vikings
Anyone watching this past weekend’s Minnesota Vikings‘ blowout victory against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC divisional playoff game got a second-half surprise when cameras spotted Prince rooting on the Vikes in a skybox at Minneapolis’ Metrodome. It’s only fitting that the Purple Rain rocker would be rooting on the Purple Pride, being a native son of the Twin Cities, but after watching Brett Favre lead the team to within one game of the Super Bowl, Prince hurried back to Paisley Park to record a new fight song for the team called “Purple and Gold,” Minnesota’s Fox 9 reports.

“I saw the future,” said Prince after watching his first Vikings game in “a very long time,” Fox 9 reports. As evidenced by the clip above, a snippet of “Purple and Gold” debuted last night, and while we’re not really in 1999 territory here, or “LT Slide Electric Glide” for that matter, how many football teams can say their fight song was penned by a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer? Whether “Purple and Gold” can attain the same heights as football anthems like “Fly Eagles Fly” or “J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets” remains to be seen, but the Vikings franchise is apparently huge fans of their new song, promising to post it on their Website in the near future.

Lyrics to “Purple and Gold” in Prince’s trademark shorthand:
“Purple and Gold”
the veil of the sky draws open
the roar of the chariots touch down
we r the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
as we approach the throne we won’t bow down
this time we won’t b denied
raise every voice and let it b known
in the name of the purple and gold
we come in the name of the purple and gold
all of the odds r in r favor
no prediction 2 bold
we r the truth if the truth can b told
long reign the purple and gold
the eyes say ready 4 battle
no need 4 sword in hand
we r all amped up like a rock n roll band
ready 2 celebrate every score
ready 2 fight the elegant war
ready 2 hear the crowd roar
that’s what we came 4
and so much more
in the name of the purple and gold
r spirits may b tired
r bodies may b worn
but since this day is r destiny
r history — that’s y we must b
4ever strong as the wind that blows the Vikings’ horn
in the name of the purple and gold
