Mary J. Blige to Perform ‘My Life’ in Webcast
Mary J. Blige will be the latest artist to team with a Hollywood director for a special live webcast as part of the American Express Unstaged series. Following in the footsteps of collaborations such as Arcade Fire and Terry Gilliam, Duran Duran and David Lynch and Coldplay and Anton Corbijn, the R&B icon will collaborate with Adam Shankman, the choreographer and director of the movie musical adaptation of Hairspray. Blige is set to star in Shankman’s film version of the rock musical Rock of Ages.
Blige’s concert, which will be filmed and broadcast from Club Nokia in Los Angeles on November 17th, will find the singer performing her 1994 breakthrough album My Life in its entirety. The singer will also perform selections from her new sequel to that record, My Life II… The Journey Continues (Act 1).

Shankman, who is a judge on So You Think You Can Dance and produced the 2010 telecast of the Academy Awards, says that he plans to keep the emphasis on Blige and her songs. “This is not putting together her world tour,” he told the New York Times. “So it’s not like, let’s start from scratch. This is looking at an album, looking at her life, looking at her evolution and putting an evening together about it.”
