British rock band 65Daysofstatic released their album We Were Exploding Anyway yesterday, and it features a track that strays away from the group’s usual instrumental style. The eight-minute long “Come to Me” boasts vocals from The Cure’s Robert Smith, which was a partnership that began on a half-year world tour in 2008. “We got on really well with all of The Cure and when, in the thick of recording We Were Exploding Anyway, we realized that the as-yet-untitled ‘Come To Me’ needed vocals, Robert sprang immediately to our collective hive mind. We asked him if he’d do it, he said yes,” 65Daysofstatic’s Paul Wolinski explains.
Even though 65Daysofstatic is known for instrumental songs, they grappled with the idea of recruiting Robert Smith to sing on a shorter, more radio friendly track because the band “always strives to write the most direct, accessible music we can. We love pop music,” Wolinski says. Ultimately, 65Daysofstatic “asked [Smith] to sing on an eight-minute track with lots of beats and noise and then covered his world-famous voice with glitches and distortion. It just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. And it still does,” Wolinski explains.
