Heartless Bastards Take Jalopy to Oz in ‘Marathon’ – Premiere
Heartless Bastards aren’t exactly heartless. The garage rockers know a good time, and filming the video for “Marathon,” from their latest album Arrow, was fun, despite the track’s somber tone. The band dials it down, riding Erika Wennerstrom’s voice over spare guitar as the song builds into a mighty crescendo. In the clip, Wennerstrom cruises the streets, picking up a peculiar series of hitchhikers that look suspiciously like refugees from The Wizard Of Oz.
“We had such a great time filming ‘Marathon.’ Having the band and myself dressed up like Wizard of Oz was hilarious. We definitely got some looks when we stopped at traffic lights huddled in an AMC Pacer,” Wennerstrom tells Rolling Stone. “We filmed some scenes at this bar a friend of mine owns, in Austin. He and his friends played all these unique instruments with mallets and hand drums out back.”
And who is that in the role of Toto? “The dog’s name is Okra,” Wennerstrom says. “All day long I thought everybody was calling her Oprah which I thought was a funny name for the dog.”
