Björk ‘Crystalline’
French filmmaker Michel Gondry built his reputation as one of the most inventive directors of his generation by starting out in music videos. Much of his best work in that medium came out of his frequent collaborations with Björk, with whom he created iconic clips for the songs "Human Behaviour," "Isobel," "Army of Me," "Hyperballad," "Jóga" and "Bachellorette." The video for "Crystalline," the first single from the Icelandic singer's new album Biophilia, reunites the duo for the first time since the late Nineties. The singer appears as a sort of god, observing celestial events such as meteor showers and cosmic rays, with each action corresponding to a sound in the song. As with much of Gondry's work, the imagery is charmingly lo-fi and wonderfully surreal, serving the larger themes of beauty and nature in Björk's music without sacrificing a sense of humor and whimsy.
