Cash Released From Hospital
Johnny Cash was discharged from Nashville’s Baptist Hospital on Tuesday after being hospitalized two weeks for pancreatitis.
Cash entered the hospital on August 26th after suffering from stomach pains. The ailment forced the legendary singer-songwriter from making a much-anticipated appearance at MTV’s Video Music Awards on August 28th. He is now resting at his Tennessee home, with plans to visit Los Angeles to begin selecting songs with producer Rick Rubin for his fifth American Recordings album.
According to Cash’s manager, he and Rubin have recorded more than fifty songs for possible inclusion on the album, and will cut the list down to about fifteen for the album’s release next year. Their most recent collaboration, American IV: The Man Comes Around, was released earlier this year.
Before American V sees release, though, Cash and Rubin will offer up vault material from their ten years of collaborating. “There’s loads of songs for each of the albums we recorded, a hundred or more,” Rubin said. “For some albums we recorded as many as seventy songs, and on some as few as thirty-five. It’s an overwhelming amount of work.”
And in other Cash news, he has selected his favorite songs by other artists for the latest CD in the Artist Choice series, due next week. Songs by Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and Bruce Springsteen’s cover of Cash’s own “Highway Patrolman” were among the chosen.
