Justin Vernon Consoles Grizzly Bear Over Grammys Snub
Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon has some encouraging words for Grizzly Bear frontman Ed Droste, who took to Twitter today after his band’s critically lauded album Shields was snubbed by the Grammys.
Lamenting Grizzly Bear’s lack of nods last night, Droste reached out to Vernon (@blobtower) specifically, asking: “Don’t know how you managed to infiltrate. . . what’s the secret?” referring to Bon Iver’s multiple wins last year, including Best New Artist.
Vernon – an outspoken critic of the Grammys, as evidenced by his victory speeches last year – responded to Droste over two tweets, saying: “y’alls music is pure as fuck and there is nobody making music like you and i think it’s truly unique. the grammies aren’t a measure of much that is calculable or quantifiable by our own contexts for music. why you create is most important” [SIC].
You can check out the back-and-forth between the two artists, which is rather adorable in its message of positivity and celebration of creation.
We won’t win the Grahmees! 🙁

So the Grammies are literally based off sales and nothing else? #bummerzone

@blobtower or maybe we gotta make better music :/ point is a year ago I was so excited you were nominated, and nobody from “our world” 🙁

@edwarddroste this is why i hate the grammies. because it allows you to question what you’ve done. don’t question what you’ve done Ed.

@edwarddroste All this being said, FUCK those morons for not knowing enough about GB #jordongotcutfromhighschoolbasketball

For the record, Droste later assured everyone that his initial Tweets were sarcastic – in case his phonetic spelling of “Grahmees,” use of “#bummerzone” and general hyperbole didn’t give that away.
