Coachella Expands to Two Weekends in 2012
The promoters behind the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have announced that the event will be expanded to two consecutive weekends next year, April 13-15 and April 20-22, with the same lineup in the same location in Indio, California. The promoters are clearly banking on the notion that there is enough audience demand to fill the 75,000 capacity park two weekends in a row.
Passes for both weekends will go on sale on Friday at 10 a.m. PT. Tickets for this year’s festival sold out in six days earlier this year. No artists for the 2012 festival have been announced.

This is a very risky move for Coachella. Though the festival has become increasingly popular, there is no guarantee that demand is high enough to sell out the same bill over two consecutive weekends. Also, the logistics of booking artists for two weekends may be difficult and costly, which could potentially drive down profits for the event.
