Dave Matthews Band Reveal “Big Whiskey” Track List, Cover Art
The Dave Matthews Band have revealed the track list to their new album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, out June 2nd. Including first single “Funny The Way It Is,” which is still available as a free download over at DMB’s official site, the Rob Cavallo-produced album features 13 songs. The band also unveiled GrooGrux‘s Mardi Gras-inspired hand-drawn cover artwork.
“This is a good record,” Dave Matthews told Rolling Stone during a recent studio visit. “Even people who don’t like Dave Matthews Band are going to like this record — and if they don’t, then they just don’t like music.” RS also called Big Whiskey “DMB’s heaviest album yet, both musically and emotionally,” an observation reinforced by the hard-edge first single “Funny The Way It Is.” The album is also a tribute to saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who passed away early in the album’s recording as a result of injuries sustained in an ATV accident near the band’s hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia. “GrooGrux King” is a reference to LeRoi’s nickname.
Several GrooGrux songs, “Funny The Way It Is,” “Spaceman” and “Why I Am,” were performed when Dave Matthews Band kicked off their spring tour Tuesday, April 14th, at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In Rock Daily’s review of the show, Kevin O’Donnell observed that “Why I Am” is “a pummeling, near-power-pop number that’s destined to become a showstopper,” featuring Matthews on electric guitar. The concert also featured a cameo from Gregg Allman. DMB have already announced both spring and summer tours, and have also been booked to headline San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival.
