Phish Fill Up “Loving Cup” and Richards Cracks Jokes on ‘Fallon’
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon wrapped up its special performances devoted to the Rolling Stones last night with a visit from Phish, who had the daunting task of choosing just one of the songs off Exile on Main Street to cover (the Vermont jam band famously played the 1972 Stones double album front to back at Festival 8 last year). For their first late-night performance in six years, Trey Anastasio and Co. were introduced by none other than Keith Richards himself and returned to an old fan favorite, “Loving Cup,” which the band has been playing regularly live since 1993 — they even made the Stones cut the final encore at their most recent New Year’s Eve performance in Miami.
Stones Week has had it share of surprises — Taj Mahal performing “Shine a Light,” Mick and Keith appearing via satellite to poke fun at themselves, Justin Bieber and the Double Down sandwich during a “Pros & Cons” segment — but on last night’s episode Richards sat down on Fallon’s couch to talk about the Exile reissue (“It deserves a second run”) and his latest hobby, raising lemon trees. The famous Richards’ wit was in full effect: After Fallon asked the guitarist whether he is writing an autobiography, Richards deadpanned, “Yeah, I am… and I can’t remember a thing.” Richards also spoke about his allegiance to vinyl, and revealed that the short Between the Buttons rocker “Connection” is among his favorite Stones tunes.
