Beth Ditto Serenades the Versus Fashion Show in Milan
As she continues to evolve into one of contemporary fashion’s key muses, Gossip singer Beth Ditto has developed a special love for maverick Scottish designer Christopher Kane. His prismatic patterns, techno fabrics and daringly modern palettes suit her proclivity for the bright and bold, and she is the perfect candidate to sport his looks confidently. In 2007, the pair collaborated on a Swarovski Rocks concert and ever since, Kane has been breathless in his praise of the singer. Ditto even revealed to Rolling Stone last year that she was wearing one of his rainbow-hued creations at her MAC Fashion’s Night Out appearance.
This weekend, Ditto partnered up with Kane yet again for the Versus Spring 2013 show in Milan. (Kane serves as creative director of the sporty Versace outpost line.) As ladies in next-level raver garb sauntered down the catwalk, the singer entertained the crowd with a mini-set of Gossip hits. The fusion of garage-punk blues and trippy dance-ready fashion worked well; as Ditto launched into 2006’s dynamite single “Standing in the Way of Control,” women poured out in magenta mini-dresses, looking like stewardesses from another planet. The models sported a lot of Kane’s classic, cyber-cool touches like expensive-looking plastic skirts and vibrant mesh tunics layered over polka-dot dresses.
As the models on the runway conjured a jaunty, fembot vibe, Ditto’s soulful, soaring vocals kept things earthy. The singer sparkled herself in a black dress with a colorblocked harness, belt and trim, proving that Kane’s clothes are ones to move mountains in.
