Lady Gaga Announces Massive Summer Monster Ball Arena Tour
Lady Gaga first announced the idea for her Monster Ball tour in October 2009, after her planned Fame Kills trek with Kanye West was canceled, and she debuted the live spectacle a month later. The singer revamped the show into a massive arena show for its European kick-off in February. And now the pop diva is upping the ante once again, announcing an ambitious 31-date summer tour that launches June 28th in Quebec. The tour will make stops at arenas in Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Detroit and other major U.S. and Canadian markets. Tickets for most dates go on sale this Friday, March 19th, through Live Nation; special guests will be announced shortly. Fans have already noted there’s no Chicago date on the schedule, as well as a sizable hole in Gaga’s itinerary from approximately August 6-8th, lending credence to rumors that she’ll perform at the 2010 Lollapalooza fest.

Gaga — who describes the tour as the first ever “pop-electro opera” — told Rolling Stone last year the idea for the show is rooted in futuristic stage drama. “The theatrics and story elements are in the style of an opera. Imagine if you could take the sets of an opera, which are very grand and very beautiful, and put them through a pop-electro lens. The design of the show is very, very forward, very, very innovative. I’ve been thinking about ways to play with the shape of this stage and change the way that we watch things.”

As Rolling Stone reported from her first U.S. Monster Ball date, Gaga’s show features extreme wardrobe changes, the singer tackling numerous instruments and all of her biggest hits from The Fame and its reissue follow-up The Fame Monster. When the show returned in England, Gaga added a new narrative (she and her pals race to a party) and a 40-foot animatronic sea monster.
Last week, Lady Gaga made headlines by premiering her new video for “Telephone”, which co-stars Beyoncé and features a Quentin Tarantino-inspired narrative of sex, violence and product placement. This morning Gaga called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to discuss the clip and her mutual fandom with Beyoncé.
