Doggumentary
“I’m smokin’ grape Purple Urkle/You in Doggie World, come and join my circle,” Snoop raps on “Boom,” which features T-Pain and samples Eighties synth greats Yaz. The Doggfather’s 11th disc shows how big that circle can get. Gorillaz, Bootsy Collins, Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, R. Kelly and many more show respect as Snoop wistfully evokes his thug youth over Nineties G-funk, celebrating his longevity while admitting he’s now more pitchman than playa. On “Superman,” a goofy-ol’-stoners duet with Willie Nelson, he keeps it real with middle-aged honesty: “I blew my throat and I blew my tour/I wound up sippin’ on soup du jour.” Can’t front on that.
