Orgy Make a “Spectacle”
Orgy are recording their fourth studio album in singer Jay Gordon and bassist Paige Hayley’s Los Angeles studio. The alt-metal band has already laid down four of the twenty songs they’ve penned for the follow-up to last year’s Punk Statik Paranoia.
As opposed to building tracks around electronic loops, as they have on recent records, Orgy are committed to starting with sturdy rock songs this time around. “Before it was so experimental,” says Gordon. “The main thing is to not get too attached to the toys, and bells and whistles. We’re going to have a bunch of great songs and then add all the nonsense in later.”
Before the nonsense begins, Orgy will release the DVD Trans Global Spectacle — featuring the band on and off stage — on August 23rd. “It is total-reality Orgy,” says drummer Bobby Hewitt. “Our fans have only seen us in videos, in pictures or on stage. But this shows us in our bunks on the bus, bored during soundcheck, playing golf and just being idiots.”
Trans Global Spectacle also lives up to its name with a few “Girls Gone Wild” moments scattered about. “There’s one part where this girl got on the bus and got totally naked,” Hewitt says. “She was wasted. And [guitarist] Ryan [Schuck], myself and Jay decided to put her clothes on: Jay’s wearing her dress and Ryan’s wearing her underwear and bra, and they run off the bus and into a hotel lobby. And she’s sitting there saying something about her father being the mayor of some city. Crazy!”
Gordon’s favorite moment involves Schuck squeegeeing a rig in his underwear. “We call Ryan ‘Liquid Idiot’ because he has one beer and gets out of control,” the singer says. “He likes to sit around the bus naked and hug guys to make them feel uncomfortable. One time at a truck stop, he got out of the bus and sat down to use the computer. Then he asked this trucker guy if he could do his windows.”
The rockers also have included some more obvious career highlights, like their breakout performance on MTV’s Fashionably Loud. Says Hewitt, “Watching that gave me chills.”
