The trailer for Precious, which stars both Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz, is screening now over at the WeAreAllPrecious Website. The film, which was originally titled Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire (it now takes its name from its main character) was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and is currently a official selection at the Cannes Film Festival.
Based on its trailer alone, Carey’s performance in Precious makes amends for her less-lauded roles in Glitter and Wise Girls. The singer completely shakes off all vestiges of her diva persona and takes on the frumpy, gritty role of as a social worker. The film also features Lenny Kravitz’s actual acting debut — he previously lent his voice to the 1998 animated Rugrats Movie. The rocker makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the trailer as a doctor in the hospital. We’re assuming Kravitz will play a larger role, given that he’s the fourth name listed on the movie poster. The question is, will Kravitz’s performance make him worthy of our Rocker-Actors Who Don’t Suck gallery?
In his Sundance wrap-up, our movie critic Peter Travers wrote, “[Director] Lee Daniels’ film got right up in your face, being the story of Precious Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a morbidly obese high school girl pregnant by her father for the second time. Mo’Nique, as the mother from hell, picked up an acting prize. Now let’s see if this powerhouse can dodge the chill of an NC-17 rating.” Precious opens in Los Angeles and New York on November 6th.
